Atlanta Falcons Begin 2025 Season: Fresh Leadership, New Hope, and Championship Aspirations

A Fresh Chapter in Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons are embarking on their 60th NFL season, their second under head coach Raheem Morris, with clear objectives: improve on their previous 8-9 record and end their seven-year playoff absence.
New Leadership and Team Direction
The team recently announced their 2025 captains, with quarterback Michael Penix Jr., offensive linemen Chris Lindstrom and Jake Matthews, safety Jessie Bates III, inside linebacker Kaden Elliss, and punter Bradley Pinion chosen by their teammates to lead the squad.
Penix Jr., now the unquestioned starting quarterback, enters his second training camp looking to build upon his rookie season, where he showed promise in three starts. The strong-armed lefty has had time to develop chemistry with his receiving corps.
Defensive Overhaul
The Falcons have made significant moves to strengthen their defense, particularly in the pass rush department. They made waves in April’s draft by selecting Jalon Walker at No. 15 overall and trading back into the first round to secure James Pearce Jr. Walker, a Georgia product and Butkus Award winner, was among the top pass-rushing prospects available.
Under new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, the team also added veteran Leonard Floyd to help improve a pass rush that ranked 31st in the league with just 31 sacks last season.
Season Outlook
Recent history suggests exciting matchups ahead, as the last four games between the Falcons and their division rivals, the Buccaneers, have been decided by six points or fewer – a first in the 63-game history of this matchup. The team has shown particular strength at home in divisional games, going 6-3 since 2022 and scoring at least 24 points in all nine games – the longest such streak in franchise history.
As quarterback Michael Penix Jr. stated regarding the team’s mindset: “We’ve got to come in with that right mindset to make sure that we dominate from the start of the game all the way to the finish and do whatever it takes to make sure that we come out on top.”
