Cooper Kupp’s Rams Legacy at Crossroads: From Super Bowl MVP to Uncertain Future

A Star’s Uncertain Future

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead has indicated that wide receiver Cooper Kupp returning to the team next season is the “least likely” scenario, marking a potential end to his illustrious chapter with the organization.

The Rise and Recent Challenges

Kupp’s peak came during the 2021 season when he achieved the receiving triple crown with 145 catches, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns. His extraordinary performance culminated in winning both the Offensive Player of the Year award and Super Bowl LVI MVP honors in the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

However, since that remarkable achievement, Kupp has been plagued by injuries, missing 17 games over the past three seasons. Of the games he has played, it’s been estimated he wasn’t fully healthy for about half of them.

Financial Implications

Kupp’s current contract represents a significant financial commitment for the Rams, with a cap hit of $29.78 million in both 2024 and 2025. This makes him the second-highest paid wide receiver in 2024, behind only Tyreek Hill, and the fifth-highest paid receiver next year.

Looking Ahead

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Rams, Kupp remains confident about his playing career. He anticipates having a full, healthy offseason and has emphatically stated he will be playing in 2025, believing he still has “a lot of good football left” in him.

The Rams do have options regarding Kupp’s future, including the possibility of trading him to save $12.5 million or designating him as a post-June 1 cut to save $15 million.
