Luka Dončić Cements Lakers Future with Massive Contract Extension Following Emotional Dallas Return

A New Chapter in Lakers Purple and Gold
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić has secured his future with the team, agreeing to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, which includes a player option in 2028. This landmark deal comes after one of the most dramatic trades in NBA history.
The Trade That Shocked the NBA World
The basketball world was stunned when, on February 1-2, 2025, Dončić was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in a three-team deal involving the Utah Jazz. This historic move marked the first time in NBA history that two reigning All-NBA Team players were traded for each other midseason. The trade is considered one of the most unexpected and lopsided trades in NBA history.
Performance and Impact
In his first season split between the Mavericks and Lakers, Dončić averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists in a career-low 50 games. After joining the Lakers, he immediately became the team’s leader, topping the charts in points, rebounds, assists, steals and 3-pointers per game following his February 10 debut.
Looking to the Future
“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” Dončić stated. “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud”.
Contract Implications
The new contract eliminates Dončić’s 2026-27 player option and keeps him out of free agency next summer. Looking ahead, Dončić could opt out in 2028 and potentially sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which could amount to a five-year, $417 million contract.
