NYC’s 24th 9/11 Anniversary: Remembrance, Resilience and Continuing Impact

Annual Commemoration Details
The 2025 commemoration ceremony will begin at 8:30 AM on September 11, with a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 AM, marked by the tolling of bells across the city.
Following tradition, all 2,983 names inscribed on the memorial will be read aloud, including both 9/11 victims and the six people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Expanded Memorial Activities
The iconic Tribute in Light will return to Manhattan’s skyline, with the twin beams being complemented by buildings lit in sky blue across the city, including One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, The Oculus, the Bank of America Tower, and the JFK Air Traffic Control Tower.
FDNY Memorial Wall Update
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) will hold its 2025 World Trade Center Memorial Wall Plaque Dedication at Department Headquarters in Brooklyn, adding 39 new names of members who died from illnesses related to their work in the rescue and recovery efforts following September 11th. Tragically, the FDNY has now lost more than 400 members to World Trade Center-related illnesses, exceeding the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11 itself.
Public Access and Participation
Family members will have access to the Memorial plaza starting at 7:30 AM, with the commemoration expected to conclude at approximately 1:00 PM. The museum will be closed to general visitors on September 11, allowing victims’ families to visit privately.
Educational Initiatives
The Memorial is offering a free 9/11 Anniversary Digital Learning Experience for students and teachers worldwide, featuring a 30-minute film with first-person accounts of the attacks and their aftermath, complemented by live chat sessions with Museum staff throughout the day.
