Tragic Loss of Ukrainian Artist Iryna Zarutska Raises Questions About Public Transit Safety

A Dream Cut Short
Iryna Zarutska, who emigrated from Ukraine with her family in August 2022 to escape the war, was a talented artist who had graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in Art and Restoration.
Tragedy struck last month when Zarutska was fatally stabbed while riding a light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred on August 22, when she was sitting in a light rail car. According to surveillance footage, the attack came from behind, resulting in a fatal wound to her neck.
A Life of Creativity and Kindness
Known for her generous spirit, Zarutska frequently shared her artwork with family and friends. She was passionate about sculpting and designing unique clothing that reflected her vibrant personality. Beyond her artistic pursuits, she had a special connection with animals and was often seen walking her neighbors’ pets with her characteristic radiant smile.
Legal Proceedings and National Response
The Justice Department has filed federal charges against the suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., who faces one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. Reports indicate that Brown had previously served five years in prison for robbery with a dangerous weapon and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. His mother had recently attempted to secure an involuntary psychiatric commitment due to violent behavior at home.
Community Impact
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has described the incident as a “senseless and tragic loss.” The community has rallied in support of Zarutska’s family, with a GoFundMe page titled “In Loving Memory of Irina” raising $58,000 as of recent reports.
In a touching tribute to her love for her adopted country, when the Ukrainian Embassy offered to help return her body to Ukraine, her family declined, stating, “She loved America. We’re going to bury her here.”
