Dewald Brevis: Rising Star’s Remarkable 2025 Season Marked by Test Debut and CSK Move

A Breakthrough Year for South Africa’s Young Talent
Dewald Brevis has transformed from a promising talent into a mature cricket force in 2025. After his initial T20I appearance against Australia in 2023 and subsequent return to domestic cricket, he has shed the ‘Baby AB’ nickname and established his own identity.
His domestic performance has been exceptional, playing a crucial role in MI Cape Town’s maiden SA20 title victory. He also demonstrated his red-ball cricket prowess by finishing as the second-highest run-scorer in first-class competition, accumulating 573 runs at an impressive average of 47.75, including two centuries.
International Success and Test Debut
Brevis made his Test cricket debut on June 28, 2025, with an impressive performance of 51 runs off 41 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes. His 95-run partnership with fellow debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius proved crucial in preventing an early South African collapse.
IPL 2025: A New Chapter with Chennai Super Kings
In a significant career move, Brevis was officially signed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 18, 2025. He joined as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, securing the team’s remaining overseas slot for a fee of INR 2.2 crore.
Known for his explosive right-handed batting style and ability to strike the ball hard and long, Brevis, who was once compared to AB de Villiers, brings considerable power-hitting capabilities to CSK, particularly valuable in the powerplay overs. He now has the opportunity to share the dressing room with cricket legends like MS Dhoni and Devon Conway.
Recent Achievements
In the 2025 SA20 tournament, Brevis showcased his exceptional batting skills by scoring 291 runs at an average of 48.50, maintaining the highest strike rate among batters who played five or more innings. His performance made him the sixth-leading run-scorer in the competition and MI Cape Town’s second-highest scorer.
