Jezebel’s Rebirth: How the Pioneering Feminist Website Found New Life Under Paste Media

A New Chapter for Feminist Media
The story of Jezebel took a dramatic turn in late 2023 when G/O Media, facing difficulties, announced plans to sell the publication in October 2023. By November 9, the company suspended Jezebel’s operations and laid off 23 editorial staffers as part of a wider restructuring, having failed to find a buyer.
However, hope emerged when Paste Magazine, an Atlanta-based entertainment and culture publication, acquired Jezebel. The site, long “known for its fearless, female-empowering content,” found a new home in an unexpected place. The acquisition came as a surprise, as Paste had not initially considered purchasing the publication until after learning of its closure.
Editorial Independence and Future Vision
Under Paste Magazine’s ownership, Jezebel is experiencing a renaissance. The acquisition has brought together Paste Magazine’s established media presence with Jezebel’s influential position in addressing contemporary issues. Importantly, Paste Magazine has committed to preserving Jezebel’s editorial independence and maintaining its distinctive voice.
Current Operations and Future Plans
The website officially relaunched on December 11, 2023, with Lauren Tousignant, who served as interim editor of Jezebel’s prior incarnation, taking the helm as editor-in-chief.
Under Paste Media’s stewardship, the goal is to make Jezebel “as good as it’s ever been” while continuing to grow and improve. The publication aims to be a place where writers can focus on creating great stories about arts, culture, and politics.
Impact and Legacy
Jezebel’s legacy is encapsulated in its original tagline – “sex, celebrity, politics with teeth.” It has established itself as a daring feminist publication that millennial women have turned to for political and cultural commentary. The site’s format has been influential, inspiring other women-focused websites including Slate magazine’s Double X, xoJane, The Hairpin, and The Frisky.
