Doncaster Sheffield Airport Secures Historic £160m Revival Package for 2026 Reopening

Major Breakthrough for Regional Aviation

In a landmark decision, South Yorkshire’s mayor Oliver Coppard and the region’s council leaders have unanimously approved nearly £160m of funding to support the reopening of the former Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA). The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Board’s vote marks a crucial step forward in the airport’s revival.

Economic Impact and Employment

The ambitious project is expected to create more than 5,000 direct jobs and 6,500 indirect jobs, with potential to boost the economy by £6.6bn when fully operational. Detailed assessments of the South Yorkshire Airport City programme indicate that the airport could attract up to two million passengers annually within a decade – significantly higher than previous passenger numbers. The net economic benefits could reach £1.5 billion within the first three decades of operating.

International Partnership and Operations Timeline

The council has established a wholly owned subsidiary – Fly Doncaster – and has secured Munich Airport International as strategic partner to support the reestablishment of operations over a multi-year period. The current timeline projects freight flights to resume in summer 2026, with passenger flights becoming available for booking from autumn/winter 2026 for operations in the following year.

Government Support and Investment

The decision, backed by the government, envisions the creation of a sustainable aviation hub in South Yorkshire to drive economic growth in the region. The funding will enable the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to invest in creating a sustainable aviation hub using their devolved funding.

Future Prospects and Challenges

The City of Doncaster Council has already taken significant steps, including acquiring airport land and assets through a long-term lease, initiating regulatory airspace reinstatement, and appointing Munich International Airports as operator. The reopening is expected to mark a significant milestone in reconnecting the region with national and global markets, fostering business confidence, and delivering long-term social and economic benefits across South Yorkshire.
