Merseyrail Revolutionizes Travel with New Tap & Go System and Service Improvements

Major Digital Payment Revolution on Merseyrail
Mayor Steve Rotheram has unveiled a game-changing Tap & Go system across the Merseyrail network, allowing passengers to tap in and out of stations using a MetroCard, eliminating ticket queues and ensuring the lowest possible fares.
System Benefits and Customer Response
The innovative system automatically calculates the best value fares based on platform validations, with daily and weekly caps ensuring passengers receive the most economical ticket prices while speeding up their journeys. The system has received overwhelming support during its pilot phase, achieving a remarkable 4.85 out of 5 satisfaction score, with 96% of passengers recommending it to others.
Network Performance and Infrastructure
Merseyrail has distinguished itself as the UK’s top train operator in 2025, achieving an overall satisfaction score of 93%, while maintaining the country’s best punctuality rate at 89%. The network currently serves 69 stations across two lines – the Northern and Wirral lines – with 76 miles of routes, including 6.5 miles underground, and carried 28.3 million passengers in 2023/2024.
Future Developments
Later this year, passengers will be able to use their bank cards, phones, or watches directly for payment, eliminating the need for a MetroCard. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create an integrated transport system across the Liverpool City Region, combining buses, trains, and ferries into one cohesive network with smart, contactless travel at its core. The improvements aim to encourage more people to choose public transport over cars, supporting the city region’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon status by 2035.
