Chris McCausland Makes History as First Blind Winner of Strictly Come Dancing
Breaking Barriers in British Television
British comedian Chris McCausland has captured the nation’s hearts and made television history. In December 2024, McCausland won series 22 of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Dianne Buswell. He is the first blind contestant to appear on the show, breaking new ground for disability representation in mainstream entertainment.
A Journey of Determination and Excellence
McCausland competed in the twenty-second series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in September 2024, where he was partnered by professional dancer Dianne Buswell. Throughout the competition, the pair consistently impressed judges and audiences alike. In the semi-finals they danced a Charleston and a Viennese Waltz, the latter of which scored 36 points. The couple became the 100th Strictly couple to perform in Blackpool, marking yet another milestone in their remarkable journey.
Opening Up About Life Beyond the Spotlight
Following his Strictly triumph, McCausland has been candid about his personal life in his memoir ‘Keep Smiling’. McCausland is blind due to retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that caused him to lose his sight completely by age 22. In recent interviews, he has shared how his visual impairment has affected his marriage to wife Patricia and his experiences as a father to their 11-year-old daughter, Sophie.
Continued Success and Future Projects
On 29 June 2024, his Saturday morning chatshow The Chris McCausland Show premiered on ITV1. The comedian continues to tour with his stand-up show ‘Yonks’ throughout 2025 and 2026, whilst his memoir explores the realities of living with blindness. His victory on Strictly Come Dancing represents more than personal achievement—it demonstrates that talent and determination transcend physical limitations, inspiring millions and challenging preconceptions about disability in the entertainment industry.
