Cannock Chase Emerges as Pioneer in UK Wildlife Conservation with Innovative 2025 Projects

A Historic Landscape Embracing Modern Conservation
Cannock Chase, designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), stands as one of the UK’s premier locations for European dry heath land and represents the most extensive such habitat in the Midlands region.
Groundbreaking Conservation Initiatives
The area has recently secured significant funding through a partnership with wildlife and conservation NGO ARG UK to expand its conservation programme. Starting in Spring 2024, a comprehensive survey and monitoring programme was established to study adders across the Chase, aiming to develop strategies to protect one of Britain’s most iconic native species.
Recent research has revealed the area’s remarkable biodiversity, with records showing over 2,655 invertebrate species, including 226 species on national lists of ‘conservation concern’. Additionally, new research has confirmed that Cannock Chase provides habitat for 9 out of Staffordshire’s 12 bat species.
Environmental Challenges and Solutions
While the Chase’s habitats are relatively large and offer protection for wildlife, the area faces increasing pressure from rising visitor numbers, climate change impacts, increased wildfire risks, and new pests and diseases. The AONB is also becoming less connected with surrounding greenspace, potentially isolating wildlife populations.
Future Conservation Plans
The Farming in Protected Landscapes programme has been extended to March 2025, while Defra’s new Outcomes Framework will soon define the contribution that Protected Landscapes should make to national targets. These initiatives are part of the government’s ambitious global goal to protect 30% of land for nature by 2030.
Community Engagement
A new video campaign has been launched to raise awareness about Cannock Chase National Landscape’s special qualities, encouraging visitors and residents to protect, respect, and enjoy the area. The initiative emphasizes that everyone can make a difference in keeping Cannock Chase special, promoting the Cannock Chase Code and encouraging support for local businesses and produce.
