Death in Paradise Embarks on New Chapter with Don Gilet as Lead Detective in Series 14

New Detective Takes Charge in Saint Marie
Death in Paradise’s series 14 premiered on January 31, 2025, on BBC One, with US viewers getting access through BritBox on February 19. The new season introduces Don Gilet as Detective Inspector Mervin WiIson, joining returning cast members Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, and Élizabeth Bourgine.
Transition in Leadership
The change in leadership follows the departure of Ralf Little as DI Neville Parker after series 13. The transition began during the Christmas 2024 special, when Commissioner Patterson called London for a replacement. DI Mervin Wilson, who was initially on holiday in Saint Marie, received orders to remain and solve a murder case. Despite his initial reluctance about island life, a personal connection to Saint Marie convinced him to stay.
Star-Studded Guest Appearances
The new season features an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Doctor Foster’s Adam James, Playing Nice’s Michelle Greenidge, former Corrie star Bhavna Limbachia, and Queens of Mystery actress Siobhan Redmond. Additional appearances include Casualty actor Tony Marshall, The Bay’s Imogen King, and McDonald & Dodds’ Tala Gouveia, among many others.
Expanding Universe
The Death in Paradise franchise continues to grow, with a second spin-off called Return to Paradise announced for ABC television in Australia and BBC One in November 2023. This 6-episode series, set in the beachside hamlet of Dolphin Cove, was released in October 2024 on ABC-TV and iView in Australia, and in November 2024 on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.
Enduring Success
Death in Paradise has maintained its popularity on British television, consistently ranking among the top three most-watched programmes. While critics have described it as “an undemanding detective show, with nice Caribbean scenery,” the series continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of mystery and tropical charm.
