Iconic Home Alone House Gets £5.5 Million Restoration to Recapture Movie Magic
A Return to Holiday Nostalgia
The beloved Home Alone house, located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, has captured hearts worldwide since the 1990 Christmas classic hit cinemas. After selling for $5.5 million in 2025—about $250,000 over the asking price, the iconic property is undergoing a significant transformation. The interior is currently being restored to match its appearance in the original 1990 blockbuster film, bringing relief to fans who were dismayed by previous modernisations.
From Sterile to Nostalgic: The Restoration Project
The new owners, who remain largely anonymous, purchased the property in January 2025 specifically to restore it to its former glory. Project manager Scott Price explained the vision: “Our vision is to bring back the warmth and just the love from the movie”. The previous owners had controversially renovated the home in 2018, replacing its warm, inviting character with stark grey and white aesthetics that fans described as removing the house’s soul.
Fans who visited the house expressed excitement about the restoration, with one visitor from Ohio thrilled that the new owners decided to reverse the changes. The owner is staying tight-lipped on the project timeline, though more improvements to the outside of the house are planned.
Cultural Phenomenon Beyond Cinema
The Home Alone house transformed into a global phenomenon over three decades, with devoted fans worldwide travelling to Winnetka seeking the perfect photo. The property’s significance extends well beyond its architectural value. Interestingly, most of the Home Alone interiors were never actually filmed in the real house, as the production designer and film crew built elaborate sets on a soundstage in an abandoned high school gymnasium because the real property was too small for the massive film crew.
The restoration represents more than just a renovation project—it’s a preservation of cultural heritage and childhood memories for millions. As the house returns to its 1990s appearance, it reaffirms the enduring magic of Home Alone and its special place in holiday tradition.
