Hargreaves Lansdown: New Era Begins Following £5.4 Billion Private Equity Acquisition
Major Milestone in UK Wealth Management
Hargreaves Lansdown, the United Kingdom’s market-leading investment platform, has entered a transformative new chapter following the completion of its acquisition by a private equity consortium. In March 2025, CVC Capital Partners, Nordic Capital and Platinum Ivy (a wholly-owned subsidiary of ADIA) completed the acquisition of Hargreaves Lansdown and the subsequent delisting of the company from the London Stock Exchange. The deal, valued at £5.44 billion, represents one of the most significant transactions in the UK’s financial services sector this year.
Strategic Vision and Client Growth
The acquisition comes at a time of strong performance for Hargreaves Lansdown. The platform surpassed two million active clients for the first time and reported record assets under administration of £172.7bn, adding a net 136,000 new clients in the year to 30 June 2025. Hargreaves Lansdown is the UK’s market leading platform for retail investors with an impressive position and strong purpose in the attractive UK wealth market.
The Consortium brings extensive experience in supporting businesses undergoing transformation, with strong track records of investing in regulated financial services companies, and plans to accelerate Hargreaves Lansdown’s transformation plan including investment in technology infrastructure, digital channels and service enhancement.
Leadership Changes and Future Direction
Following the acquisition, Hargreaves Lansdown has strengthened its executive team with strategic appointments. The firm appointed Doug Abbott as its new chief product officer, a role created as part of the firm’s strategy to strengthen its platform offering, with Abbott reporting directly to chief executive Richard Flint. The platform continues to champion regulatory reforms that encourage broader investment participation among UK savers.
Significance for Investors
This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Britain’s retail investment landscape. With over 40 years of history, Hargreaves Lansdown serves as a crucial gateway for millions of UK savers accessing financial markets. The new ownership structure promises accelerated innovation while maintaining the platform’s founding mission of empowering financial freedom for retail investors across the United Kingdom.
