Fabian Schär Commits Future to Newcastle United with Contract Extension
Contract Extension Ends Transfer Speculation
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär has extended his contract at St. James’ Park until the end of the 2025/26 season. This development brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the Swiss international’s future at the club, with the 33-year-old previously linked with a potential exit during the January transfer window.
Uncertain Future Resolved
Throughout late 2025, Schär’s future at Newcastle United was up in the air as his contract was set to run out at the end of the season. German clubs were monitoring his situation, and they could look to make a move in the coming months. The defender had also faced challenges, having picked up a concussion during the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona on September 18 which ruled him out for three matches. Following his injury, Malick Thiaw replaced him and because of his outstanding form has started all 16 matches since.
Schär’s Impact at Newcastle
The 33-year-old is one of the first team squad’s longest-serving current players having joined from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña in July 2018, and has made 221 competitive appearances for the Magpies, scoring on 19 occasions. Despite losing his regular starting position this season, Schär remains valued by manager Eddie Howe. Howe said Schär has been outstanding in his time at the club, showing a fantastic attitude in the group, and has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far.
Significance for Newcastle’s Future
The contract extension represents a crucial piece of business for Newcastle United as they compete on multiple fronts. Sporting director Paul Mitchell stated that Schär has played a significant role in the club’s growth in recent years and continues to have an important role to play on and off the pitch. With the defender’s experience and leadership qualities, Newcastle have secured depth in their defensive options as they pursue success in both domestic and European competitions. The deal provides stability whilst the club continues to develop younger players in their squad.
