Is Semenyo Going to AFCON? Why the Bournemouth Star Won’t Be at the 2025 Tournament
Why Antoine Semenyo Won’t Be at AFCON 2025
The question on many Premier League fans’ minds has been answered: Antoine Semenyo will not feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as Ghana failed to qualify. This comes as welcome news for AFC Bournemouth, who will retain one of their star performers during the crucial winter period.
Ghana failed to reach the tournament after a disastrous qualifying campaign in which they failed to win a single match against Angola, Sudan and Niger. This marks the first time Ghana has missed out on AFCON since 2004, ending their remarkable run of consecutive tournament appearances.
Impact on Bournemouth and the Premier League
Semenyo’s availability is particularly significant for Bournemouth. No African player has contributed more to his side’s attacking output than Semenyo, making him invaluable during the demanding festive fixture schedule.
The tournament takes place in Morocco from Sunday, 21 December 2025 to Sunday, 18 January 2026. Six rounds of Premier League fixtures are due to take place between those dates, as well as the third round of the FA Cup and the semi-final first legs of the EFL Cup.
Whilst stars like Mohamed Salah and Bryan Mbeumo will depart for international duty, Semenyo joins Mohammed Kudus, Yankuba Minteh, and Beto among African players whose countries did not qualify for AFCON.
What This Means for Fans
For Bournemouth supporters and Fantasy Premier League managers alike, Semenyo’s continued availability represents a significant advantage. His club can maintain their attacking threat during a period when rivals may be depleted, whilst the 25-year-old continues attracting attention from top Premier League clubs. Ghana’s absence from AFCON 2025 may disappoint the Black Stars’ faithful, but it ensures Semenyo remains a key figure in England’s top flight throughout the winter months.
