Macclesfield FC: From Phoenix Club to FA Cup Glory Seekers
The Silkmen’s Remarkable Journey Continues
Macclesfield FC, the phoenix club that rose from the ashes of Macclesfield Town’s collapse in 2020, stands on the brink of footballing history. A win on Sunday, December 7, would see the Silkmen progress to the third round of the competition, at which point the giants of the Premier League enter the fray. The National League North side faces Slough Town in the Emirates FA Cup Second Round, with their away allocation entirely sold out, demonstrating the passionate support behind this remarkable club.
A Historic Climb Through the Football Pyramid
Macclesfield recorded three promotions in the four subsequent seasons, winning the North West Counties Premier Division in 2022, the NPL Division One West in 2023, and the NPL Premier Division in 2025. Under manager John Rooney, who replaced Robbie Savage in July 2025, the club has maintained its upward trajectory. Macclesfield’s promotion to the National League North was confirmed with six matches still to play after defeating Bamber Bridge 2–1 on 22 March 2025, becoming 2024–25 Northern Premier League Premier Division champions.
BBC Documentary Captures the Story
The club’s extraordinary journey features in a new BBC documentary. Robbie Savage: Managing Macclesfield FC is available on BBC iPlayer now and will air on BBC3 on Monday 8 December at 8pm. The documentary follows Macclesfield FC’s players, staff and fans through the 2024/25 season, with the film focusing on Savage as he attempts to get his team over the line during his debut season in charge.
Looking Ahead: Multiple Competitions
Beyond the FA Cup, Macclesfield FC continues its campaign across multiple competitions. Macclesfield FC make the trip to the 1st Cloud Arena on Saturday 13th December, kicking off at 3:00pm for an Isuzu FA Trophy Third Round tie against South Shields. The club’s success story represents more than football achievement—it symbolises community resilience and the power of determination in reviving a beloved institution.
