MK Dons Edge Past Swindon Town in Tense Boxing Day Encounter
Boxing Day Blues for Swindon as MK Dons Secure Vital Victory
Swindon Town’s wretched Boxing Day record continued as they were defeated 1-0 away from home at promotion rivals Milton Keynes Dons. The match, played on 26 December 2024 at Stadium MK, proved crucial in the League Two promotion race, with both sides entering the fixture as genuine contenders for automatic promotion.
Nemane’s Moment of Magic Decides Tight Contest
Both teams created plenty during the first 45 minutes, but only a sensational strike from Aaron Nemane was the only thing that caught the ‘keepers out. Nemane received the ball on the left touchline and dribbled inside, before leathering the ball from 25 yards out into the bottom corner of the net. The goal came against the run of play during a period when Swindon had started brightly, creating several chances in an entertaining first half.
Swindon Dominate Second Half but Cannot Find Equaliser
Swindon looked to turn the screw after the break and had two efforts cleared off the line, but could not find the goal they needed. After 57 minutes, Munroe whipped a ball back in after a corner and it came to Knight-Lebel who headed down into the corner, but Craig MacGillivray somehow denied him. But, in saving it, the ball popped back up and Knight-Lebel could only send it into the side netting. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Swindon were frustrated by resolute defending and poor finishing.
Implications for the League Two Promotion Race
Since 2014, Town have won just once on Boxing Day and slipped behind Bromley into third in League Two. The result maintains MK Dons’ strong home form and keeps them firmly in the promotion mix. For Swindon manager Ian Holloway, it represents a disappointing setback in what has otherwise been a promising campaign. The Robins will need to bounce back quickly to maintain their automatic promotion hopes in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive League Two season.
