Steve Evans’ Second Spell at Rotherham United Ends Following Heavy Home Defeat

Sudden Departure from New York Stadium

Steve Evans’ second tenure at Rotherham United has come to an abrupt end following his return in April 2024. The Scottish manager was sacked on March 29, 2025, after a disappointing 4-0 home defeat to Crawley Town, with the team positioned 16th in League One, albeit 9 points clear of the relegation zone.

The decision saw not only Evans depart but also his entire backroom staff, including assistant boss Paul Raynor and coaches Gary Mills and Ian Pledger. Former coach Matt Hamshaw has been appointed to take charge until the end of the season, supported by goalkeeper coach Andy Warrington.

A Contrasting Return

Evans’ return to Rotherham last April came with high expectations and a three-year contract. He oversaw significant changes to the squad, with 14 summer signings and three additional recruits in January. However, the team continued to struggle with injury problems that had plagued them during their Championship campaign.

Legacy and Achievement

Throughout his managerial career, Evans has been a notable figure in English football, managing over 1000 games and achieving more than 500 wins across various clubs, accumulating nine promotions in total. His first spell at Rotherham was particularly successful, as he guided the club from League Two to the Championship.

Looking Ahead

The new interim management team’s first challenge will be Tuesday’s trip to Northampton Town. The change at Rotherham United marks the third managerial departure in League One among Yorkshire clubs this March, following similar changes at Huddersfield Town and Barnsley. All three clubs are expected to make permanent appointments during the summer.
