PlayStation 5 Thrives in 2025 with Acclaimed Exclusives and Major Milestones

PlayStation 5 Reaches Five-Year Milestone

Five years after its November 2020 launch, the PlayStation 5 has evolved significantly through system software updates, new accessories, and community milestones that continue to redefine play. In August of this year, the PS5 passed a huge sales milestone as parent company Sony revealed the console had sold over 80 million units in five years.

2025: The Year PS5 Came Into Its Own

Each year brings unforgettable memories for the PlayStation community, and 2025 was no different with the launch of memorable games like Ghost of Yōtei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Blue Prince, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. PS5 sales are on par with the PS4, even after a hefty price hike was introduced this year.

The PlayStation 5 is entering the latter phase of its lifespan, a period when developers are able to fully utilise its strengths and push its technology in ways that were impossible during the console’s early years. Industry analysts note that this maturation phase has delivered some of the console’s most impressive titles to date.

Recent System Updates and Features

The company has begun a gradual rollout of a new PS5 update for December 3, bringing the console to version 25.08-12.40.00, with improvements to messages and usability on some screens whilst also improving system software performance and stability. The console launched with 11 accessibility features, which has grown to 20 by 2025 – including new additions such as Accessibility Tags and Second Controller for Assistance.

Looking Ahead

Whilst the PS5 has enjoyed a strong 2025, questions remain about the console’s trajectory. The arrival of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 this year is significant because it marks a rare platform shift that once seemed unthinkable, with the Forza Horizon series crossing over to PlayStation representing a major moment in a changing industry that is more open and less defined by traditional console boundaries. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, PlayStation owners can look forward to an exciting lineup of titles in 2026 and beyond, building on the strong foundation established during this landmark year.
