Total War: Warhammer 40K Officially Announced — Coming to PC and Consoles
A Historic Moment for Strategy Gaming
The gaming world erupted with excitement as Creative Assembly unveiled the next Total War game at the Game Awards 2025, revealing that Total War: Warhammer 40K is on the way. This announcement marks a groundbreaking shift for the franchise, as it’ll also be coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, marking a first for the long-running series. Actor David Harbour, known for his role in Stranger Things and a self-confessed Warhammer 40K enthusiast, took to the stage to make the reveal, adding star power to this momentous occasion.
Why This Matters
After the tremendous success of the Total War: Warhammer Fantasy trilogy, fans have long speculated about Creative Assembly tackling the sci-fi Warhammer 40,000 universe. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 brings the award-winning franchise into the Era Indomitus, with deep turn-based strategy and epic real-time battles. The decision to bring this title to consoles represents a strategic evolution for the series, potentially introducing millions of new players to complex strategy gaming on platforms traditionally dominated by action and adventure titles.
What Players Can Expect
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will have four factions to choose from at launch: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari, with each offering wildly different playstyles and challenges in both campaign and battle modes. The game promises unprecedented scale, as it also reveals that factions will be competing across multiple planets, meaning it’s war at a far greater scale than any prior Total War game. Players will be able to customise their armies extensively, from colour schemes and heraldry to tactical abilities and traits.
The Future of Total War
This announcement comes at an exciting time for Creative Assembly, which also recently revealed Total War: Medieval 3 is in early development. Creative Assembly previously noted that console releases could be possible in the future, specifically namedropping Xbox and PlayStation when discussing upgrades to the game engine the studio uses. Titled the Warcore engine, these upgrades have focused on improved physics, pathfinding, and vehicle functionality, among other features. While no release date has been announced, the game is now available to wishlist on Steam and console platforms, signalling active development and building anticipation for what could be one of the most significant strategy game releases in years.
