Mystery Disease Sweeps Globe as Health Officials Track Multiple Outbreaks

While adenovirus is generally quite mild in most instances, although like Covid or flu, symptoms could become more severe if you’re immunocompromised, the rapid spread has left many patients requiring supportive care whilst their bodies fight the infection.

Mysterious Illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo

A separate and more alarming health crisis has emerged in Central Africa. Increased disease surveillance has identified in total of 1,096 sick people and 60 deaths in Basankusu and Bolomba fitting a broad case definition of the mysterious illness. Symptoms include fever, headache, chills, sweating, stiff neck, muscle aches, multiple joint pain and body aches, a runny or bleeding from the nose, cough, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Initial investigations have ruled out some of the most feared pathogens. Initial laboratory analysis has produced negative results for Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease. Around half of the samples tested positive for malaria, which is common in the region. Health officials continue to investigate whether severe malaria, possibly compounded by other factors, is responsible for this outbreak.
