Frimley Park Hospital Rebuild: A New Era for Surrey Healthcare

Major Milestone Reached in Hospital Transformation

Frimley Park Hospital has reached a significant turning point in its transformation journey. In August 2025, it was announced that the Frimley NHS Trust would receive upwards of £2 billion in Government funding to facilitate the construction of a new 800-bed hospital. This development represents one of the most substantial healthcare infrastructure investments in Surrey’s history, addressing urgent safety concerns whilst modernising patient care for future generations.

Why a New Hospital is Essential

The need for a complete rebuild stems from serious structural concerns. The NHS Trust has been searching for a new site after concerns were raised about the longevity of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which makes up the majority of the current hospital buildings. Built in the 1970s, the existing facility was not designed for modern healthcare demands, making the new hospital essential for delivering safe and effective services.

The Secretary of State announced the outcome of the review which re-confirmed the prioritisation of the seven RAAC schemes due to safety risks, including Frimley Park Hospital, and they are all in wave one of the programme.

What to Expect from the New Hospital

The planned facility will be Surrey’s largest hospital, featuring cutting-edge technology and modern design. It will use smart technology to manage heating, power and care delivery, being built to the Government’s ‘Hospital 2.0’ standards. In turn, according to the Trust, this will bring “better patient care, lower energy costs, and a safer, more flexible environment for staff and patients”.

The hospital will be built using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), where many parts of the hospital are made in factories and then assembled on-site. This innovative approach promises faster construction whilst maintaining high quality standards.

Site Selection and Timeline

Nearly 20 locations, each more than 20 acres and within five miles of Frimley Park, were assessed in what the Trust described as a “detailed and thorough process”. The Trust has not yet announced its preferred location, citing commercial confidentiality, but said it will confirm the site as soon as it is permitted to do so.

The Trust said it remains on track for construction to begin between 2028 and 2029. Meanwhile, plans outlined in the SOC also include additional theatres and recovery space at Heatherwood Hospital, refurbishment of parts of the existing Frimley Park site for community and outpatient services, and further investment in technology and modern facilities across all locations.

Significance for the Community

This project represents more than just infrastructure development—it’s about transforming healthcare delivery for communities across Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire. The investment ensures that patients and staff will benefit from a modern, sustainable facility designed to meet healthcare needs well into the 2030s and beyond, whilst the existing site will continue to serve the community in a new capacity for outpatient and community services.
