Rob Burrow’s Lasting Impact: New MND Centre to Transform Patient Care in Leeds

A Legacy of Hope and Determination

Rob Burrow CBE, a legend in rugby league, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in December 2019 at age 37. Despite his diagnosis, he faced the challenge with positivity and determination, supported by his wife Lindsey, parents, and three children. In the four years until his death in June 2024, Rob tirelessly worked to raise awareness of MND.

Standing at just 5 ft 5 in (165 cm), Burrow was known as ‘the smallest player in Super League’, yet became one of the most successful players in the competition’s history. His achievements included eight Super League championships, two Challenge Cups, and multiple individual honours during his career with the Leeds Rhinos.

Transformative Healthcare Project

A groundbreaking development is now underway with the construction of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds – the first of its kind in the UK. This innovative facility will unite all MND services under one roof, significantly improving the experience for patients and their families.

In a remarkable achievement, Leeds Hospitals Charity has announced reaching their £6.8 million fundraising target in just three years, thanks to over 17,000 donors. The Burrow family’s inspiring story has created an extraordinary community of supporters across the country.

Continuing Impact

Burrow’s influence continues even after his passing in June 2024. His final documentary, ‘There’s Only One Rob Burrow’, broadcast after his death at his request, included a previously unknown final message of hope and love.

His legacy has transformed public understanding of MND, making it easier for patients to explain their condition to others. His story has inspired unprecedented levels of fundraising and awareness for the disease.

The annual Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon, now in its third year, continues to celebrate his life and achievements, bringing together thousands of participants in a display of athletic endeavour and community spirit that perfectly embodies Rob’s lasting impact on society.
