David Attenborough: Broadcasting Legend Continues to Champion Wildlife at 99
A Living Legend Approaching a Century
Sir David Attenborough will celebrate his 99th birthday on May 9, as he admits he is “nearing the end of his life,” yet the renowned naturalist shows no signs of slowing down. Born 8 May 1926, the British broadcaster, biologist, natural historian and writer continues to captivate audiences worldwide with his groundbreaking documentaries and unwavering commitment to environmental conservation.
Wild London: Bringing Nature Home
David Attenborough’s latest documentary on the animal kingdom has foregone the depths of the ocean or the vast savannah plains for the streets of London. Wild London is streaming now on BBC iPlayer and will give city dwellers a new respect for their animal neighbours, from foxes and hedgehogs to snakes and prehistoric insects. The documentary showcases the unexpected biodiversity thriving in Britain’s capital, including an estimated 40 snakes living in the trees on Regent’s Canal and peregrine falcons nesting atop the Houses of Parliament.
Upcoming Kingdom Series
Renowned naturalist and three-time Emmy Award-winner Sir David Attenborough will narrate Kingdom, a major new six-part natural history series that chronicles four African animal families over five years. Kingdom premieres on Saturday, January 24, 2026 on BBC America and AMC+, promising viewers an intimate look at leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, and lions in Zambia’s remote river valley.
Museum Experience Extended
The Natural History Museum announced that due to popular demand, its headline experience, Our Story with David Attenborough, will extend its run through summer 2026. The incredible response from over 80,000 visitors shows this timely story resonates and highlights the power of immersive storytelling in connecting audiences with pressing environmental issues.
An Enduring Legacy
First becoming prominent as host of Zoo Quest in 1954, his filmography as a writer, presenter and narrator has spanned eight decades, including the iconic Planet Earth franchise and The Blue Planet series. He has advocated for restoring planetary biodiversity, limiting population growth, switching to renewable energy, mitigating climate change, reducing meat consumption and setting aside more areas for natural preservation. As Sir David approaches his centenary, his influence on environmental consciousness remains immeasurable, inspiring generations to cherish and protect our natural world.
