Good Morning Britain Enters New Era with Major Schedule and Production Changes

Introduction: A New Chapter for Britain’s Breakfast Television

Good Morning Britain, ITV’s flagship breakfast programme, is set to undergo its most significant transformation since its 2014 launch. From January 2026, Good Morning Britain (GMB) will be produced by ITV News at ITN, marking a major shift in how Britain wakes up to its morning news and entertainment. These changes reflect ITV’s broader strategy to consolidate operations, enhance journalism, and adapt to the evolving television landscape.

Extended Broadcasting Hours

The programme will be extended to run from 6am to 10am daily for 22 weeks of the year and 6am to 9:30am for 30 weeks of the year, giving viewers more comprehensive morning coverage. During weeks when the Lorraine programme airs its reduced schedule, GMB will occupy the 9:30am slot, whilst during the weeks Lorraine is not on air, Good Morning Britain will run from 6am to 10am. This expansion represents a substantial increase in news and current affairs programming for British viewers.

Production Transformation

GMB will be produced by a dedicated team which will be employed at ITN, based largely out of its central London HQ on Gray’s Inn Road. ITV News’ main studio will be transformed to become the combined home of Good Morning Britain, ITV Network and London news, plus ITV’s special event coverage. This consolidation brings all of ITV’s national news operations under one roof, creating efficiency whilst maintaining the programme’s trusted mix of interviews, debate, and entertainment.

Strategic Significance and Future Outlook

The move is part of a wider review by ITV of its daytime scheduling and production to find cost savings and efficiencies. However, the changes also serve a greater purpose. Together with the 30 minute expansion of ITV’s early evening news in 2022, this means ITV will have provided a 20% increase in scheduled national and regional news each week day. For viewers, this means more in-depth journalism, extended regional coverage, and enhanced analysis of breaking stories. As Britain’s media landscape continues evolving, Good Morning Britain’s transformation positions it to remain a cornerstone of British breakfast television well into the future.
