Rising Star Kimi Antonelli: Mercedes’ Bold Choice for 2025 Formula 1 Season

A Historic Announcement

Mercedes has made waves in the Formula 1 world by announcing their 2025 driver line-up, featuring 18-year-old Italian Kimi Antonelli alongside multiple Grand Prix-winner George Russell.

The Young Prodigy’s Journey

Born on August 25, 2006, in Bologna, Italy, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is the son of sportscar racing driver Marco Antonelli. His rise through motorsport has been meteoric, with impressive achievements in karting before transitioning to junior formulae. His track record includes victories in the Italian F4 Championship, ADAC Formula 4 in 2022, and Formula Regional European in 2023 with Prema.

Preparation for the Big League

Antonelli has been rigorously preparing for his F1 debut, participating in test sessions, working extensively in the simulator, and conducting data simulations at Mercedes’ Brackley facility. He has been increasingly present in the F1 paddock, building relationships with team members and learning from both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton’s experience.

Making History

When Antonelli lines up for the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, he will become the third youngest driver to start an F1 Grand Prix. Mercedes believes Antonelli has the potential to be one of the greats, and his signing marks a historic moment as it will be the first time both Mercedes drivers have come through their junior programme.

Looking Ahead

Speaking about his appointment, Antonelli expressed his excitement: “It is an amazing feeling to be announced as a Mercedes works driver alongside George Russell for 2025. Reaching F1 is a dream I’ve had since I was a small boy.” He acknowledged that while he is still learning, he feels ready for the opportunity and is focused on delivering the best possible results for the team.
