Hugh Jackman Brings Neil Diamond’s ‘Song Sung Blue’ Legacy to Life in Heartwarming Musical Drama

A Musical Legacy Reimagined

Focus Features has unveiled the official trailer for ‘Song Sung Blue,’ a musical drama starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as a married couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute band. The film is set for a nationwide theatrical release on December 25, 2025.

The film tells the true story of Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, portrayed by Jackman and Hudson respectively, who transformed their lives by becoming local icons through their Neil Diamond tribute band known as ‘Lightning & Thunder.’

Star-Studded Ensemble

The impressive cast includes Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, with special appearances by Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi. The film is helmed by acclaimed director Craig Brewer, known for ‘Coming 2 America’ and ‘Dolemite Is My Name.’

The Musical Heritage

The film’s title draws inspiration from Neil Diamond’s 1972 hit ‘Song Sung Blue,’ which was originally inspired by Mozart’s Piano Concerto #21. The song was featured on Diamond’s album ‘Moods’ and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Kate Hudson, who stars in the film, shared her enthusiasm on Instagram, expressing how she “loved every second making this beautiful film” and working alongside Hugh Jackman while performing Neil Diamond’s iconic songs. Critics are already suggesting it could be the perfect holiday movie, promising music, laughs, and emotional moments.

A Story of Determination

The story behind ‘Song Sung Blue’ is particularly compelling as it was originally considered “stranger-than-fiction” by industry producers, who believed the true story would be too incredible for audiences to accept. The film celebrates Neil Diamond’s towering presence in the music landscape, showcasing his ability to weave narrative into melody that has resonated with diverse audiences throughout decades, from shimmering pop hits to poignant ballads.
