North West England: Weather Warnings, Health Alerts and Festive Celebrations

Transport Disruption Across the North West

The North West of England has faced significant challenges this December as the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rainfall on Monday 15 December. Due to severe rainfall over the weekend, Northern continue to strongly advise customers not to travel in Cumbria, with multiple rail routes suspended and no replacement bus services available. The extreme weather has impacted travel between major stations including Carlisle, Whitehaven, and Barrow-in-Furness, leaving commuters and travellers stranded during the busy pre-Christmas period.

Flu Cases Surge Across the Region

Health services across the North West are facing unprecedented pressure as winter illnesses take hold. In the North West there has been a 36.6% increase in the number of people in hospital with flu, with admissions rising from 295 people in late November to 403 by early December. The NHS across the North West is facing unprecedented demand for services as winter pressures, increases in the early wave of super flu cases and upcoming industrial action are all adding to usual winter pressures, according to Dr Michael Gregory, Medical Director at NHS England in the North West. Residents are being urged to get vaccinated against flu to protect themselves and reduce strain on healthcare services.

Festive Events Bring Cheer to the Region

Despite the challenging weather and health conditions, the North West remains alive with festive spirit. From 28 November 2025 until 4 January 2026, stroll among more than 80 community-decorated trees at the annual Christmas Tree Festival at Chester Cathedral. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Orrell Hill Woods transforms into a 16‑acre winter wonderland: Santa’s Secret Forest, offering families magical experiences through Christmas Eve. Christmas markets, light trails, and festive attractions continue to draw visitors across Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and surrounding areas.

Looking Ahead

The North West faces a challenging period as it balances winter weather conditions, increased health pressures, and the desire to celebrate the festive season. Residents are advised to check travel conditions before journeying, prioritise flu vaccinations if eligible, and enjoy the region’s abundant festive offerings safely. The combination of challenges highlights the region’s resilience and community spirit during this critical winter period.
