Britain’s Prince Andrew will have his royal titles formally removed and will move out of his home in Windsor, Buckingham Palace said Thursday, as the royal faces growing pressure over his ties to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The royal will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, Buckingham Palace has said.

In addition to no longer being referred to as Prince Andrew — the title given to him at birth by Queen Elizabeth, who died in 2022 at the age of 96 — Andrew is also losing the titles of Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh, the style “His Royal Highness” and the honors of the Order of the Garter and Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order. Earlier this week, the Ministry of Defense confirmed that Andrew no longer holds the honorary military rank of vice-admiral and has now been reduced to the rank of commander (retired) Royal Navy.

Since being stripped of all his titles by his brother King Charles last month, the former Prince Andrew has kept a low profile and stayed away from royal events. Prince Andrew was seen arriving at St. James’s Palace for the christening of Princess Beatrice’s daughter, Athena, marking a rare public appearance since he was stripped of his titles last month.

The documents show that U.S. authorities sought to interview the former prince in connection with two separate criminal investigations. In 2022, Mountbatten-Windsor settled a civil suit with Epstein survivor Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was 17 years old.
