Weston-super-Mare FC Make FA Cup History and Secure Stadium Redevelopment
Historic FA Cup Achievement
Weston-super-Mare reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in their 138-year history with a 2-0 win at Chelmsford on 6th December 2025. Louis Britton struck twice in the second half, after 62 and 88 minutes, to settle a lively battle between two sixth-tier National League South sides. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for the Somerset club, nicknamed ‘The Seagulls’.
Speaking after the match, Weston-super-Mare boss Scott Rogers told BBC Radio Bristol: “I’m really ecstatic, proud and I hope the lads feel exactly the same”. The victory represents the culmination of an impressive FA Cup run that has captivated the club’s supporters and put non-league football in the spotlight.
Strong League Performance
The Seagulls currently sit 3rd in the table, three points behind leaders Hornchurch with a game in hand on the two clubs above them. In their third campaign back in the National League South, the Seagulls narrowly missed out on the play-offs last term, finishing one place and four points short. The team’s consistency across all competitions demonstrates their ambition to achieve promotion.
Following former boss Scott Bartlett’s exit to National League side Eastleigh in September, his assistant Scott Rogers stepped up to take the job permanently and has, so far, seamlessly adapted to being Weston manager.
Stadium Redevelopment Approved
Beyond on-field success, Weston-super-Mare FC received significant news off the pitch. The club has hailed the granting of planning permission which is set to see its Optima Stadium transformed into a venue comparable to facilities in EFL League Two, with North Somerset Council approving plans to upgrade the stadium. Planning permission was granted for the redevelopment in November 2025 with an expected start date in early 2027.
Looking Forward
The combination of historic FA Cup success, strong league form, and ambitious stadium development positions Weston-super-Mare FC as a club with genuine potential for future growth. The third round draw will determine their next FA Cup opponents, offering the possibility of facing top-tier opposition. For a club that competes in the National League South, the sixth tier of English football, these achievements represent not just sporting success but also the realisation of long-held ambitions to compete at higher levels.
