Chris Richards Makes History with Crystal Palace’s Historic FA Cup Triumph
American Defender Stars in Palace’s Greatest Achievement
Chris Richards celebrated as Crystal Palace defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2024-25 FA Cup Final, starting and playing 90 minutes at Wembley Stadium, helping the Eagles lift their first trophy in club history. The Hoover, Alabama native became just the second American to play in and win an FA Cup final, after helping Crystal Palace stun Manchester City 1-0 at London’s Wembley Stadium.
A Perfect Cup Campaign
In 2024/25, Richards made 32 appearances across all competitions – six of which were in the FA Cup, where he played every single minute on the way to making history in the final against Manchester City. Richards won five duels, made 12 clearances, and two defensive recoveries as Oliver Glasner’s men pulled a famous FA Cup shock. Palace went on to win the FA Cup, their first ever major trophy, and qualify for European competition for the first time; Richards received praise for his defensive shut-out performance in the 1-0 victory against City in the 2025 FA Cup final.
Recent Challenges and Recovery
The 25-year-old defender’s path to FA Cup glory wasn’t without obstacles. Richards was taken from the field on a stretcher during his team’s Carabao Cup quarterfinal shootout loss to Arsenal in December, after he leapt to defend an Arsenal cross and appeared to be in discomfort after landing. However, he recovered in time to play a crucial role in Palace’s historic achievement.
Looking Ahead to European Football
The result not only guarantees Palace’s spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League but also into August’s FA Community Shield. Richards says he and his Crystal Palace teammates are still flying high from their remarkable FA Cup Final victory. The American international’s exceptional performances throughout the season have cemented his place as a key figure in Crystal Palace’s defence and demonstrated his value to both club and country as the United States prepares for the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
