Fabian Schär Continues Newcastle United Journey With Contract Extension
Swiss Defender Commits Future to St. James’ Park
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär has extended his contract at St. James’ Park until the end of the 2025/26 season. The 33-year-old is one of the first team squad’s longest-serving current players having joined from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña in July 2018. This extension represents a significant commitment from both player and club as Newcastle continue their ambitious project under Eddie Howe.
A Trophy-Laden Season
Fabian was a key member of the squad that lifted this season’s Carabao Cup, scoring twice and providing an assist on the road to Wembley before playing the full 90 minutes in the cup final. Known for his exceptional passing range as much as his defending, the Swiss centre back has made 221 competitive appearances for the Magpies, scoring on 19 occasions. His memorable strikes include a sensational goal in Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Paris St. Germain in the Champions League in October 2023.
International Retirement and Club Focus
On 26 August 2024, Schär announced his retirement from international football. Following the European Championships in Germany, he announced his retirement from international football having amassed 86 caps and scored eight goals for Switzerland. This decision allows Schär to focus entirely on his club career as Newcastle chase European qualification and domestic honours.
Importance to Newcastle’s Plans
Newcastle United head coach, Eddie Howe, said: “Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club. As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group. He has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far, and he’ll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible.” During Newcastle’s 2024-25 season, Schar logged 34 appearances (33 starts), four goals, 133 clearances, 45 interceptions, 25 blocks and 20 tackles won.
Looking Ahead
Schär’s contract extension until 2026 provides stability at the heart of Newcastle’s defence as they compete on multiple fronts. His experience, technical ability, and leadership qualities make him an invaluable asset for the Magpies’ ambitions. For Newcastle supporters, securing Schär’s future represents another positive step in the club’s continued progression under their current ownership.
