Russ Bray: The Legendary Voice Behind Darts’ Biggest Moments

The Iconic Voice of a Generation

Russ Bray, universally known as ‘The Voice of Darts’, has recently made headlines with a surprising revelation about his distinctive raspy voice. The 68-year-old believes smoking from the age of ten played a role in shaping his iconic darts voice, though he now urges others not to follow that path. Bray’s trademark gravelly cry of “Ooooonnne hundred and eight-y!” made him famous around the world and synonymous with the biggest moments on the oche.

A Remarkable Three-Decade Career

‘The Voice of Darts’ worked as an official in the sport for nearly three decades, becoming one of the most recognisable figures in the game. The raspy-voiced referee called 28 PDC World Championship finals and was inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame in 2024. Bray stepped down from being a full-time referee following the 2023–24 PDC World Darts Championship final following a 28 year career, but his retirement has been anything but quiet.

Life After Retirement

Since stepping away from centre stage, Bray has remained exceptionally busy in the darts world. Russ Bray retired from the sport in 2024 but still works heavily now on the development of the game in other regions including in Asia where he works on the PDC Asian Tour. Bray was appointed as a PDC ambassador following his retirement, and was also inducted into its Hall of Fame. During the recent World Championship, he hosted the Worlds every day for the afternoon and evening session VIPs.

Beyond the Oche

Bray’s distinctive voice has transcended darts, leading to various commercial opportunities. He has made use of his raspy voice in various other forms of media, providing voiceover work for advertising from Coral, Ladbrokes, Cash Converters and McCoy’s Crisps. His continued presence in the sport and broader entertainment industry ensures that his legendary voice remains familiar to fans worldwide.
