Cricket World Mourns Hugh Morris: Former England Star and ECB Chief Dies at 62

A Legend Lost: Hugh Morris Passes Away

Glamorgan announced the death of Hugh Morris, the former chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), at the age of 62 on Sunday. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2022 and left his role at the Welsh county in September 2023 to spend time with his family as he underwent treatment. The cricket community across the globe has expressed deep sadness at the loss of one of the sport’s most influential figures.

Distinguished Playing Career

Morris won three Test caps for England in 1991 as an opening batsman and also led Glamorgan to the Sunday League title two years later as captain. An opening batter, Morris made three appearances for England and helped Glamorgan become county champions in 1997 — his final year before retirement with a career tally of 19,785 runs in first-class cricket and a batting average of 40.29. Hugh Morris became Glamorgan’s youngest ever captain aged 22.

Transformative Administrative Legacy

Following a stint as deputy and acting chief executive, he served as England’s first managing director from 2007 to 2013, during which time the men’s team reached number one in the Test rankings, won three Ashes series and the 2010 T20 World Cup. Morris returned to south Wales in 2013 and enjoyed nine years as Glamorgan chief executive. His work helped establish the academy system and central contracts, demonstrating his commitment to player welfare and development.

Recognition and Charity Work

Hugh Morris was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to cricket and charity. Morris, who overcame throat cancer previously, after his diagnosis in 2002, was a patron of Heads Up, a charity which focuses on head and neck cancer, and helped to raise £300,000 over eight years.

A Lasting Impact on Cricket

Hugh Morris leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that spans playing excellence, administrative innovation, and charitable dedication. His contributions shaped modern English cricket, from developing young talent to overseeing one of England’s most successful periods in international competition. The indoor cricket school at Sophia Gardens has been renamed the Hugh Morris Cricket Centre in recognition of his immense contribution to Welsh cricket. His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence on the sport will endure for generations to come.
