Andy Robertson Leads Scotland to World Cup as Liverpool Future Remains Uncertain
Historic World Cup Qualification for Scotland
Andy Robertson captained Scotland to their first World Cup qualification in nearly 30 years after a dramatic 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park. Scotland secured their first World Cup appearance since 1998, marking a monumental achievement for the nation and its captain.
Robertson recognised this was likely his final chance of ever playing in a World Cup and that he had been ‘in bits’ all day. The emotional victory was particularly poignant as Robertson revealed he was thinking about former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota leading up to qualifying, following Jota’s tragic passing in 2024.
Liverpool Career at Crossroads
While celebrating international success, Robertson’s current contract at Liverpool is due to expire in 2026. Robertson started the 2025-26 season as Liverpool’s second-choice left-back following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, however he has worked his way back into favour in recent weeks.
The 31-year-old Scottish professional footballer plays as a left-back for Premier League club Liverpool and captains the Scotland national team, also serving as Liverpool’s vice-captain. Robertson joined Liverpool in July 2017 for an initial £8 million and has since won a second EFL Cup (2024) and Premier League title (2025) with Liverpool.
Future Possibilities
Robertson is reportedly willing to rejoin Celtic in 2026 following a spell at the club as a teenager, with the 31-year-old boyhood Celtic fan potentially completing a free transfer move back to the Bhoys next summer. If he’s playing a key part after the turn of the year then he’ll likely get an extension, and if he’s playing 40 games, Liverpool will likely renew his contract.
Robertson’s legacy at Liverpool is already secured with multiple major honours, but his immediate future depends on playing time and contract negotiations. As Scotland prepares for their World Cup campaign next summer, the captain faces crucial decisions about the next chapter of his distinguished career.
