Anshuman Rath’s Inspiring Return: How Hong Kong’s Cricket Star Found His Joy Again
A Career at Crossroads
When Anshuman Rath returned to Hong Kong in early 2023, his promising cricket career stood at a crossroads. The 25-year-old contemplated switching to a career in insurance, finance, or real estate instead of returning to the team he had once captained as a teenager.
His two-year stint playing domestic cricket in India’s Odisha circuit had taken its toll – mentally, emotionally, and physically. He had gained 20 kilos, was dealing with injuries, and the game he once loved had become a burden.
The Journey of Resilience
Rath, who previously captained the Hong Kong national cricket team, had retired from Hong Kong cricket in September 2019 to pursue a career in India. He became eligible to play as a local player in India with an Indian passport holder status in August 2021 and represented Odisha in the 2021-22 Indian domestic cricket season. His return to Hong Kong’s squad came in March 2023.
The turning point came when Mark Farmer, Cricket Hong Kong’s High Performance manager, who knew Rath from his younger days, stepped in. He offered Rath a contract before he had even played again, showing faith in his abilities. This gesture of trust deeply moved Rath, who hadn’t experienced such support in years.
Present Success and Future Prospects
Most recently, Rath has been participating in the Asia Cup 2025, which began on September 09 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. He has successfully found his rhythm, regained his fitness, and most importantly, rediscovered his love for the game. Now based in Hong Kong, he enjoys a balanced life, spending time with family while embracing the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
His transformation is evident in his approach to the game: “Every time I walk on the field now, I’m smiling, I’m laughing.” The structured, professional environment reminds him of the systems in the UK, providing a clear pathway for his career development.
