From Near Disaster to Triumphant Return: Max Johnson’s Remarkable Journey Back to College Football

A Career-Threatening Setback
Just a year ago, Max Johnson lay on the field with a gruesome leg injury that ended his 2024 season shortly after it began. Today, he has completed a journey few thought possible, returning to play for North Carolina.
The Road to Recovery
Johnson’s journey back to the field was far from simple – he underwent five different leg surgeries, and at one point, there was genuine concern that he might lose his leg entirely. His rehabilitation process was gradual, starting with walking on an underwater treadmill, and around Thanksgiving, he progressed to slowly running on the same machine.
A New Chapter Under Bill Belichick
Amid the significant changes at UNC, including Bill Belichick’s arrival in Chapel Hill, Johnson’s recovery story has somewhat flown under the radar. He recently spoke before the media at North Carolina’s fall camp, sharing the details of his challenging journey.
Triumphant Return to the Field
Johnson’s perseverance paid off in UNC’s recent game against TCU, where he showed promising signs despite the team’s 48-14 loss in Bill Belichick’s debut. Coming off the bench, he impressed with 9 completions out of 11 attempts for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Looking Ahead
As the Tar Heels progress through the 2025 season, Johnson will compete in a quarterback room that includes Purdue transfer Ryan Browne and incoming freshmen, including four-star prospect Bryce Baker. The team is scheduled to continue their season against TCU at Kenan Stadium.
Despite the challenges, Johnson maintains a positive outlook, stating, “I’m blessed to be able to play football again.” His recent touchdown was particularly meaningful, marking his first scoring pass in 667 days.
