Jack O’Sullivan Embarks on New Rugby Journey with Japan’s Red Hurricanes Osaka
From Munster to Japan: A New Chapter
Irish rugby player Jack O’Sullivan has confirmed his departure from Munster Rugby this summer, concluding his tenure with the province after scoring six tries in 35 appearances since his debut against Dragons at Thomond Park in September 2019.
The 25-year-old has joined Osaka Red Hurricanes as one of three new overseas signings, alongside former Bath lock Elliott Stooke and Moana Pasifika centre Henry Taefu, for the 2024-25 season. The Red Hurricanes currently compete in the second division of Japan League Rugby One.
Legacy at Munster
O’Sullivan’s final appearance for his home province came off the bench against Zebre Parma at Virgin Media Park in Cork on March 1. Rugby has been a family affair for O’Sullivan, with his father, Tadhg, serving as the long-time Munster doctor, and his cousins, Niall and Rory Scannell, establishing themselves in the playing squad before Jack joined the academy in 2017.
Japanese Rugby’s Growing Appeal
The upcoming season of Japan Rugby League One, which kicks off on December 21, 2024, continues to attract top international talent, featuring several star overseas players and coaches alongside the best Japanese talent. Regarding his move, O’Sullivan expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited about the new challenges and opportunities that await me.”
The Japanese league has been experiencing significant growth, having surpassed one million spectators last season for the first time before the finals. The competition has also been strengthening its international connections, particularly with Australia and New Zealand, demonstrating the increasing global appeal of Japanese rugby.
