JCB’s Green Revolution: Hydrogen Engine Approval Marks New Era in Construction Equipment

Pioneering Hydrogen Technology

JCB has achieved a significant breakthrough as the first construction equipment company to develop a fully working hydrogen-fueled combustion engine, with 11 European licensing authorities now granting permission for its commercial use. This $121 million development, created by a team of 150 engineers, represents a major milestone in sustainable construction equipment.

Historic Production Milestone

The company recently celebrated a remarkable achievement with the production of its one millionth Backhoe Loader. The celebration featured a parade of 16 historic backhoes, spanning from a 1954 Mark I through to a 2025 3CX model. JCB manufactures these machines in the UK, India, and Brazil, selling them across 120 countries. The business unit has been recognized with six Queen’s Awards for its excellence.

Expanding Global Operations

JCB is significantly expanding its presence in the United States with plans to double its new San Antonio factory to one million square feet. This $500 million facility is scheduled to begin production next year and will create employment for up to 1,500 people.

Innovation and Market Leadership

The company continues to innovate with the introduction of new Stage 5 emission-compliant construction equipment, offering 10-15% better fuel efficiency, reduced maintenance costs, and enhanced operator safety. Despite a 4.3% shrinkage in the global market for construction and agricultural machinery, JCB’s sales increased by 14% to £6.5 billion, with particularly strong performance in North America, which remains the world’s largest market for construction equipment, and India.
