Newcastle Airport Set for Record-Breaking 2026 with Major Expansion
Newcastle Airport Enters Transformative Era
Newcastle Airport is preparing to welcome a record six million passengers in 2026, marking the busiest year in the airport’s history. This milestone comes as the North East England hub undergoes significant expansion and investment, positioning it as a crucial gateway for the region and beyond.
easyJet Base Launch Drives Growth
EasyJet is opening its eleventh UK base at Newcastle Airport from March 2026, basing three aircraft at the airport and doubling its network. The airline will launch 11 new routes including destinations in Turkey (Antalya and Dalaman), Greek Islands (Rhodes and Corfu), Portugal (Faro), Malta, Prague, Spain (Reus), France (Nice), Egypt (Sharm-El-Sheikh) and Tunisia (Enfidha). This investment will support around 1,200 jobs, including 130 direct positions for pilots, crew and engineers.
Infrastructure Improvements Support Expansion
The airport has unveiled a new Waiting Zone at Callerton Parkway providing up to 90 minutes free parking for taxis and public vehicles, complemented by a complimentary electric shuttle bus service launching from 6 January. These enhancements aim to improve passenger experience and accommodate increased traffic volumes.
Strategic Acquisition Strengthens Future Prospects
Spanish operator AENA has acquired a 49% stake in Newcastle Airport as part of a £270 million investment that also includes a controlling 51% stake in Leeds Bradford Airport. Airport CEO Nick Jones stated the agreement is significant for future ambitions and aligns with Newcastle’s Masterplan 2040, aiming to enhance infrastructure, expand routes and boost regional prosperity.
Significance for Regional Connectivity
The expansion represents a major boost for the North East economy, creating high-quality employment and enhancing connectivity for passengers across Northern England, Southern Scotland, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. With hundreds of thousands of additional low-cost seats now available, Newcastle Airport is cementing its position as a vital transport hub whilst demonstrating the region’s growing appeal to major international operators and investors.
