M23 Motorway Faces Multiple Closures: Key Information for Travellers and Commuters

Major Disruption on M23: What You Need to Know

The M23 motorway has been experiencing significant disruption between Junction 8 (M25) and Junction 9 (Gatwick Airport) in both directions. The closure was implemented to allow UK Power Network engineers to conduct repairs on damaged overhead power lines.

Current Closures and Timeline

Active roadworks are currently in progress, with all lanes closed. The immediate disruption is expected to continue until 6:00 AM on September 10, 2025.

Furthermore, a major roadworks scheme is currently active and scheduled to continue from September 9, 2025, to December 16, 2025.

Additional Planned Works

The closure is particularly significant as the concrete section under the road surface has severely deteriorated and requires urgent replacement. For safety reasons, overnight closures are being implemented at the M23 junction 9 roundabout, including slip roads and Airport Way. These works are being conducted overnight, Monday to Friday, between 9 PM and 5 AM to minimize disruption.

Impact on Travel

During the works, a 50mph speed restriction is in place, reducing to 40mph near the bridge. These speed limits are being enforced. While most work will be carried out using narrow lanes and hard shoulder closure, some overnight closures are necessary.

Essential Maintenance

The works include essential resurfacing, maintenance such as gulley cleaning for improved drainage, and litter picking. Bridge repairs are also being conducted, including the replacement of bearings underneath the structure and expansion joints in the carriageway and verges. These joints are crucial for allowing continuous traffic flow and accommodating the bridge’s expansion and contraction due to temperature variations. The comprehensive work aims to increase the bridge’s overall lifespan.
