Azores Islands: Pioneering Sustainable Tourism and Breaking Tourism Records in 2025

Leading the Way in Sustainable Tourism
The Azores has achieved a remarkable distinction as the first island archipelago globally to receive international certification as a sustainable destination through the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination program, making it one of the world’s most sustainable tourism destinations.
The archipelago is experiencing robust tourism growth, which is vital for the region’s economy. Visitors are drawn to the islands’ spectacular landscapes, including volcanic formations, deep-blue crater lakes, and verdant hills. The increasing number of overnight stays demonstrates strong interest from both international and Portuguese tourists exploring the islands’ offerings.
Record-Breaking Tourism Numbers
According to the Azores’ Regional Statistics Service (SREA), total overnight stays across all accommodation types reached 638,000 in July 2025, representing a 2.5% increase over July 2024. Local accommodation has become increasingly important, accounting for 310,500 overnight stays – 48.6% of the total – surpassing traditional hotels which recorded 293,100 nights (45.9%).
Innovative Environmental Initiatives
In a groundbreaking development, the archipelago has launched its first 100% electric tourism boat through Azores Whale Watching Terra Azul. This initiative marks a significant step towards responsible tourism in the Azores Islands, demonstrating the region’s commitment to preserving its natural paradise while ensuring visitors can enjoy its beauty without environmental impact.
Strategic Development and Future Outlook
The region’s success is built on pillars of cooperation, transparency, leadership, and governance among participating organizations. The government’s strategic commitment combines competitiveness with natural resource preservation, backed by substantial investment. The implementation of PEMTA 2030 – Strategic and Marketing Plan for Tourism in the Azores – has become a model for Portugal’s national tourism strategy through 2035. This plan, structured in 2023, strengthens sustainability while considering new trends and traveler profiles.
The Azores’ commitment to sustainable tourism has earned international recognition through Gold Certification from EarthCheck, establishing the region as a global benchmark in balancing economic development with environmental preservation. Notably, the region has achieved higher revenue growth compared to the increase in overnight stays and guests, indicating a focus on quality over quantity.
