Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets Surprise Update with New Resort Hotel and Features

Major Content Update Arrives After Four Years

Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 Update has officially gone live, with Nintendo sharing the patch notes on its support page. The massive version 3.0 update was released a day sooner than expected, with the update initially set to go live on Jan. 15, 2026. It is the first major content update for New Horizons since the release of version 2.0 over four years prior in November 2021, which was announced at the time as the final planned content update for the game.

What’s New in the Free Update

The free update includes a new resort hotel, additional amiibo functionality, collaboration items, updates to online play, and more. Players can help Kapp’n and his crew by designing themed rooms for guests, and decorating a hotel room will give you hotel tickets that can then be used in the souvenir shop. Storage can now be upgraded two more times—for a max of 9000 items.

It’s now possible to craft up to 10 items at once if you have enough materials, and items stored in your home storage can now be used as DIY materials. Players can unlock their imagination with crossovers from Nintendo, The LEGO Group, and the Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Details

The 3.0 update is completely free for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 players. However, players who already own the Nintendo Switch version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be able to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for $5 USD. Players who upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be able to play the game in resolutions up to 4K while playing in docked mode, invite up to 11 additional players to their island, use mouse controls when decorating, and use the built-in microphone to call their villagers.

Significance for Players

As of September 30, 2025, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 48.62 million units, making it the second best-selling Nintendo Switch game, only beaten out by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This surprise update breathes new life into one of Nintendo’s most successful titles and demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting its established player base. The timing coincides with the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, making it an attractive proposition for both existing fans and newcomers to the beloved life simulation series.
