ITV Weather Forecast: Storm Goretti Set to Bring Severe Winter Conditions Across the UK
Storm Goretti Brings Severe Weather Warnings
The ITV Weather forecast team is tracking Storm Goretti, the first named storm of the year, which could bring 5 to 10cm of snow in some areas, with up to 20cm possible on higher ground. ITV Weather is the national and regional forecast shown on UK terrestrial network ITV, and is provided by the Met Office, delivering crucial updates as winter conditions intensify across Britain.
A yellow weather warning for snow, covering large parts of Sheffield, Peterborough, Bath and Worcester, and in much of Wales, will be in place from 6pm on Thursday until midday Friday. Additionally, a yellow warning has also been issued for strong winds across Cornwall, Devon, and the Isles of Scilly from 3pm on Thursday until midnight.
Record-Breaking Cold Temperatures
The UK has experienced its coldest night of winter so far, with temperatures once again dipping below freezing for much of the country, with the lowest temperatures dropping to minus 12C. The severe conditions have prompted government intervention, as hundreds of thousands of households are getting £25 cold weather payments to help with heating costs amid the dropping temperatures.
Comprehensive Coverage and Regional Forecasts
Bulletins are usually broadcast after every ITV News and ITV regional bulletin; since March 2022, however, ITV Weather runs as a segment of the ITV Evening News, live from the news studio on weekdays. This integration ensures viewers receive timely weather updates alongside their daily news coverage.
The severe weather has already caused significant disruption, particularly in Scotland, where hundreds of schools in Scotland will remain closed for a second day, with schools in Shetland, Orkney and Aberdeenshire shut on Tuesday after pupils were given an extra day off on Monday following the festive break because of the weather.
Health Alerts and Looking Ahead
The prolonged cold spell has prompted health authorities to take action. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber cold health alerts for England as an early warning that adverse temperatures are likely to affect health and well-being, running until Friday. With weather warnings for heavy snow and strong winds in places across nearly all parts of the country over the next week, viewers are advised to check the ITV Weather forecast regularly for the latest updates and regional forecasts.
